Each obstacle you face is an opportunity for you to take yourself to the next level.
Let me repeat that for the folks in the back!
Each obstacle you face is an opportunity to GROW.
Whether it be the next level of your physical, mental, or spiritual well being, the circumstances where you struggle (or as I like to call moments of resistance) are the best opportunity to grow. Don’t hide or escape from them, dig in.
So many of us convince ourselves that happiness will come after we overcome our obstacles. But those obstacles are part of life, and happiness is the journey, not the destination. You can not stay in a cycle of looking at the far away future and what it could be because you will always be focused on tomorrow or a week from today. You will not narrow your focus to right now, to today, and seeing the obstacles right in front of you.
So, how do you make obstacles a personal growth opportunity?
- Get crystal clear on identifying where your obstacle is. Perhaps this year has taken a toll on your mental well being (hey, I wouldn’t blame ya.) You have noticed that you have heightened anxiety, maybe depression, or have lost drive or ambition. Maybe it’s not enough time for yourself, a relationship, issues with money. What is in your immediate environment that keeps making you fall and fail. Pinpoint it and accept that it is something that needs to be addressed.
- Get curious about your current mindset. What do you think about? What do you focus your energy on? Is it a scarcity or fearful mindset? As I shared in my blog about the benefits of having a daily gratitude practice, our perspective (or mindset) influences everything. Optimism is important. We as humans are hard-wired with a negative bias. We are also creatures of habit. Therefore, our past and our lifelong, deep-ingrained habits play a large role in the way we “view” or perceive things.
- Tend to your physical body. What are your habits when it comes to taking care of your physical wellbeing? Your mind, while incredibly important, is only a piece of the wellness puzzle. Tending to your body daily is a necessary component to overcoming obstacles. Identifying where your physical obstacles are may help you realize that your larger life obstacles are being impacted by a lack of physical care.
- Learn how to remove the obstacle(s) – not avoid them. It’s all about adopting new daily habits and behaviors that will make overcoming your obstacles – or changes – stick. This isn’t about setting a huge goal, a New Year’s resolution. I’m telling you, month-long goals do not work. It’s the work, the habits that you do daily that make a long-term difference to overcoming the obstacles in front of you. But what habits should you be adopting? That’s where my Epic Self-Care Challenge comes in.
